Air Bearings Limited (ABL) are a world leading innovative manufacturer of air bearing solutions, used across the engineering spectrum.

We design and manufacture high precision air bearing spindles that can run up to speeds of 400,000 rpm, with over 90% of our complete production process, from concept design through to the finished product, is completed in-house at our factory in Ferndown, Dorset.

Our Research & Design Team are currently recruiting for a R&D Technical Apprentice to join us at busy and exciting time; we are looking for someone who is looking to undertake a Degree Apprenticeship in Product Design & Development (Mechanical Engineering) whilst developing an exciting career within our established R&D Team.

What will the role involve?

You will learn all aspect of technical product design and development within a Research and Development Function and be mentored by an experienced team, whilst working directly for ABL on a permanent basis and attend college one day per week to study for the duration of the course.

  • Learn to work with assembly and quality departments to define assembly and test procedures, learning to ensure these are formally documented and revision controlled.
  • Generate all required product documentation including, but not limited to production drawings, product specifications and testing requirements
  • Assist in creating and developing product designs using CAD software.
  • Collaborate with experienced engineers to contribute to design concepts and solutions.
  • Support and Conduct research on materials, techniques, and industry trends to inform design decisions.
  • Support the design team in prototyping and testing of new products.
  • Collaborate with experienced engineers to contribute to design concepts and solutions.
  • Supporting the wider R&D Team with investigating customer/supplier issues, establishing ‘root cause’ of identified problems and working with relevant departments to ensure corrective and preventative actions are completed.
  • Within their competency, provide technical support to all departments within the business as required.
  • You will support the delivery of precision engineering products in line with customer specifications and to pre-determined deadlines
  • Ensuring all work carried out complies with health and safety requirements as laid down by the company and by external bodies.
  • Carry out any other reasonable tasks as directed by the business from time to time

Apprenticeship Course Information:

  • Degree Apprenticeship in Engineering (Mechanical Design) duration is usually 6 years (72 months)
  • You will receive training on the job and will attend college 1 day per week
  • You must consider the travel time and expenses to get to ABL and the training provider (provider to be confirmed upon further discussion with applicants).
  • You must be committed to undertaking all requirements for the apprenticeship set by ABL and the training provider.

What will you require?

  • Aged 16 or over and not in full time education
  • 32 UCAS points, one A Level at grade C in a relevant subject or equivalent AVCE or national diploma/certificate
  • A keen interest in developing your career in Research & Design within a mechanical engineering environment
  • Able and committed to obtaining your Level 6 Degree Apprenticeship in product Design and Development
  • Able to attend college release days for the duration of the course
  • Be a Self-motivated team player
  • Ability to communicate effectively and clearly with employees at all levels
  • IT literate
  • Strong numerical and literacy skills
  • Have the right to work in the UK
  • Must have access to own transport to get to work and college
