Senior Mechanical Design Engineer
Air Bearings Limited (ABL) are a world leading innovative manufacturer of air bearing solutions, used across the engineering spectrum; whilst we are based in Ferndown (Dorset), we provide real world solutions globally.
We design and manufacture high precision air bearing spindles that can run up to speeds of 400,000 RPM.
Over 90% of our complete production process, from concept design through to the finished product, is completed in-house at our factory in Ferndown, Dorset.
We are currently recruiting for an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to join us at a busy and exciting time; This is a permanent, full-time position, working within a friendly and supportive team.
This role may be suitable for an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer looking to take the next step and take ownership of design projects.

About the Role:
What will the role involve?
- Working on all stages of product development (from conceptual design, to detail design and testing), support the company’s existing and future range of air bearing products.
- Using analysis software and theoretical analysis tools, such as Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to support refining designs in line with results of the simulation.
- Creating and changing engineering drawings using 3D CAD software.
- Working with the Design team to take ownership of projects, monitoring and driving progress towards agreed completion targets and communicating issues as they arise.
- Assist in the development of manufacturing techniques for both new and existing products.
- Investigate customer/supplier issues, establishing ‘root cause’ of identified problems and working with relevant departments to ensure corrective and preventative actions are completed.
- Working with assembly and quality departments to define assembly and test procedures.
- Providing technical support to all departments within the business as required.
What will you require?
Essential:
- Have at least 5+ Years post-study work experience in a similar Mechanical Design Engineer role, encompassing all stages of product development
- A higher education qualification in Mechanical Engineering
- Significant understanding of Machine Manufacture
- Previous experience of using Autodesk Inventor is desirable, however experience of engineering modelling and drawing using 3D CAD software.
- Experience using Finite Element Analysis (FEA).
- Experience of working within formal configuration control systems.
- Right to Work in the UK
- Valid and Clean Drivers License
Desirable:
- Machining knowledge/experience
- CFD experience
- Experience of leading project teams
- Knowledge of previous experience of Lean (Continuous Improvement Methodologies)
